3D ice cream animation: Ingman cake ice creams

Have you tried apple pie with ice cream? You should! It’s as delicious as the 3D ice cream animation we made for Ingman Cake Ice Creams.

BRIEF AND CONCEPT

We were requested to create an animation for Ingman, where an apple pie and ice cream come together in a perfect blend. Our idea was to create a deliciously magical animation, where these ingredients spiral together and form a pint of ice cream. We used 3D animation spiced up with simulations to achieve a photorealistic, mouth-watering outcome. The project was commissioned by NordDDB.

3D ICE CREAM ANIMATION - PIECE OF CAKE

We start the ad by showing a delicious slice of apple pie, made using 3D animation.  Baking a 3D cake was necessary, because we needed to be able to crumble the pie magically in front of your eyes.

The crumbling of the apple pie was made using 3D simulation. As the cake starts to go, swirls of cream start surrounding the cake.

The pie crumbs further, and swirls of cream close in and start to mix with the pieces of the apple pie. Careful lighting work was a part of achieving the delicious look.

As the 3D ice cream animation escalates, the swirls of cream and crumbles of apple pie mix further. We made the commercial into a modular square format to simultaneously create horizontal and vertical versions of the ad. This enabled the client to easily create versions for all the different media.

Consequently the cake crumbles and cream swirls come together. The seamless blending in the 3D ice cream animation was achieved using high end simulations and compositing work.

In the next shot, we reveal the complete ice cream cylinder. The packaging material starts to magically wrap around the ice cream.

THE PACKSHOT

We reveal the packaging as well as the product label as the packaging material wraps around the ice cream.

We cut to a packshot with the ice cream can, as well as two additional flavor versions. We utilized still images of real apple pie, chocolate cake and spoon bread that were projected on to 3D geometry.

3D ICE CREAM ANIMATION RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

A proper high-end animation production like this always requires some research and development. Below are some process materials as we studied and tested different solutions for the production.

STILL IMAGE PRODUCTION

Although this is a 3D ice cream animation production, the brief for the high resolution print images was more traditional. Because of that, we produced the print images using traditional photography and image retouch methods. This gave us many benefits. First, the photography production gave us a lot of reference material for the animation and overall cinematography. Second, we got images from the photoshoot that we could utilize as a part of the packshot of the animation. This really tied in the look of the animation and the print images. Plus we got to eat a lot of ice cream and cake.
