Automotive industry animation is a really great marketing tool to showcase the future of electric cars and their features. For the same reason we made a super cool film to showcase Qt’s flagship user interface solutions for the automotive industry.

We were happy to produce this fast paced retro-futuristic film for Qt. Where their flagship UI setup is presented in a very engaging, informative and entertaining way. Qt is a technology powerhouse, with over one billion devices powered and assured.

THE CONCEPT FOR THE ANIMATION

Qt needed a very engaging and visual way to demonstrate their user interface solutions. We developed the concept based on Qt’s idea of a retro-futuristic world. The car industry is indeed developing at a great rate, so in this case it was a good idea to create a slightly fictional version of the near future. In addition, the retro-futuristic visual look made the animation to stand out. Outrun became the name for the film.

FILM SYNOPSIS

In the film, we follow an anonymous character travelling to a city with an autonomous electric car. Throughout the journey we can see how the car’s user interface displays important information related to different parts of the journey.

VISUAL STYLE OF QT'S AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY ANIMATION

We created a very retro-futuristic, neon light and light streak filled style for the animation. It is a combination of 2030’s and 1970’s. Therefore the color palette is mainly neon purple with green and blue highlights. Also visual effects like video-like-noise and light streaks are used extensively.

USER INTERFACES IN QT'S AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY ANIMATION

User interfaces were the actual centerpiece of this project. Whereas the visual style and world in the animation is very imaginative, the user interfaces in the video are in fact real. The UI’s are created with Qt’s Design Studio software.

DESIGNING QT'S AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY ANIMATION

A great deal of design work goes into creating an entire fictional world. That is why we made extensive styleframes, storyboards and animatics for the film to visually communicate to Qt our vision and ideas. Subsecuently we adjusted the styleframes based on the feedback we got to achieve the final desired visual look and narrative.
