3D animation with 2D style: K-Citymarket euron päivät
We love those 1950’s animated commercial characters! Back in the day we would have done it using frame-by-frame animation, but know we can do it by using 3D animation with 2D style!
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Biiig money! We had the pleasure of working with the awesome creative crew at TBWA\Helsinki and Lucy Loves in a commercial made for K-Citymarket Euron Päivät (One Euro Days) campaign directed by Johannes Salonen. We brought the new Euron Päivät coin character to life using 3D animation with 2D style!

TECHNICAL EXECUTION: 3D ANIMATION WITH 2D STYLE
We have many techniques at our disposal when working with animation. In this film, the agency had made character design for a 1950’s style character. In those days, animations were done mainly using frame-by-frame animation methods, which we still use today! However, on this project, we decided to use 3D animation as the selected technique. This was mainly due to the geometric shape and texture of the coin character (they are a bit challenging with frame-by-frame). We used 2D animation elements as well, that were integrated seamlessly as a part of the 3D animation.
The coin character was animated and then composited into the live action shots, wide and close-up.
We made the coin character fairly expressive. Our 2D illustrated elements combined with the 3D parts worked seamlessly.
The coin character had shots with dialogue as well. We made traditional lip-sync animation using 2D methods that were composited on the 3D animated character.
We delivered the final animated and comped shots to color grading and for the client to add final overlaid graphics. We made all materials with vertical versioning in mind for social media and outdoor advertising purposes.
